Let’s Talk About Text, Baby.
Post by alhalEveryone remembers their first cell phone. Maybe it was your birthday or graduation or Christmas gift, presented with a “responsible use” talk from mom punctuated with many long sighs from dad, grumbling about technology. Perhaps you remember picking out your cell at a kiosk in the mall, a young, hip sales associate spouting off about browsing capabilities and megapixels when all you wanted to know is whether THAT phone came in silver.
I remember my first phone too - and I’m proud to say I’m still using it today!
How can this be? you may ask, imagining a 1 kg. Brick Phone busting the seams of my back pocked at a club. The answer may surprise you: I’m still on my first phone because I only bought it a year ago!
That’s right - I was a cell virgin until I was 22.
I had been waiting until marriage, but temptation and convenience (not to mention some experimenting in university) changed my beliefs. I’ve been cellularily active for 13 months, and now that I’m finally comfortable with my cellularity, I’ve been able to meet some new, great people. I’ll stop now.
Over the past few years, texting has overtaken calling in a big way. It’s the main way people communicate, and why not? If I’m hosting a party at my pad and you haven’t arrived yet, texting is the perfect option.
Obviously, being a late adopter put me up against a steep learning curve when it came to texting. When should I call, when should I text? How important is spelling / grammar in this new world? And alcohol + a new cell phone with a full keyboard (I never T9ed)… this was obviously a recipe for some missteps in the cell phone game for me.
Thanks to this blog, I have found a great opportunity to share with you the Trials and Tribulations of an Overzealous Rookie Texter. Get ready for a look into my personal style, what I’ve learned, and some late night texting oopsies.
Changing my ring tone.
